The definitive project for the refunctionalization and adaptation of Catania Fontanarossa Airport consists of three main interventions:
The expansion of Terminal A was necessary due to the undersizing of current Schengen boarding areas and the inadequacy of passenger services. The interventions include enlarging operational areas, modifying remote boarding canopies with the installation of elevators and escalators, replacing ramps near security checkpoints, and reconfiguring commercial and dining services within the airside departure hall.
The definitive design includes:
These interventions aim to:
The project involves the construction of the new Terminal B (TB), the technology district (QT), and the service tunnel connecting QT and TB, along with all external works for landside road arrangements and aircraft stands in front of TB.
The architectural design features two key elements: a large, cantilevered roof over the landside plaza and uniquely shaped pillars that highlight the lightness of the roof structure.
The roof incorporates skylights with varying widths, integrated into a rhomboid mesh design. These skylights (oriented southward to prevent volcanic ash buildup) rise into peaks to optimize natural lighting.
The consultancy provided to 3Ti Progetti Italia S.p.A. focused on ensuring compliance with acoustic regulations related to internal comfort in all relevant areas. Material types and quantities were defined to meet the parameters for internal acoustic quality, ensuring both passenger comfort and speech intelligibility for EVAC alarm systems.
The guidelines of the CAM Decree of 23/06/2022 and the technical references of UNI CEN/TS 54-32:2015 were considered to ensure quality and safety in the airport environment
